Originally from the depths of the midlands of the United Kingdom, now living all the way amongst the sweet shores of Waiheke Island in Auckland, Sophie Aston has just dropped her massively long-awaited debut single, Better, making her the perfect fit for this week’s On the Radar feature.

Sophie is introspective with her flourishing and truthful energy, which encapsulates her past, present and future with her lyrically spectacular songwriting skills that have now formally been introduced to the world.

Within the lines of Better, Sophie walks through what it is like to be a female, among many other hard topics that she is allowing people to hear with immense bravery.

Better came about on a day that Sophie’s mental health wasn’t at its best that day, and it felt as though her brain was just running through every negative thought that it could. It’s quite a reflective track, coming from a delicately personal place.

Sophie has challenged my own personal way of thinking about my perspectives on life with her raw, emotiveness that has inspired deep, internal realisation and graceful thoughtfulness.

It takes a lot to be able to accomplish that, in others lives, and Sophie has such soul in her being that she allows natural gravitation towards herself as a person, and her wonderous music.

Sophie has created a well-loved community of listeners during her time living on Waiheke Island, being a frequent performer across the island and challenging locals to come and have a listen to what she has to offer.

Combined with her engaging personality and beautifully set musical skills, Sophie is a musician that you need to keep your eye on, because this is just the beginning of her path, with a lot more to come.
