On the Radar: Ragweed

Proud to present todays On the Radar feature: Ragweed! L-R: Sam, Cam and Bradley. Photo credit: Sammie Mae

Ragweed are a trio of friends made up of Cam Buyers (vocals and guitar), Bradley Jervis (bass) and Sam Shore (drums), who have landed directly on their feet, making a path to effortlessly walk through into the alternative metal space here in Christchurch.

Ragweed have been doing their thing since 2022, making humble appearances as support at a multitude of events such as alongside Stonechild, Distance, and other immense talent from both New Zealand and Australia, gaining a reputation for promising one hell of a good time.

Ragweed have also competed in Battle of the Bands through Tunesoc (University of Canterbury) both in 2022 and 2023 and while they came in at second place in 2022, they landed the top spot of being the winners in 2023, impressing not only myself, but the other three judges that were also scoring that day. We were all blown away by the talent presented before us, it was a completely unanimous decision that they were our winners for that year, and rightfully so.

Ragweed have released two phenomenal singles this year, after a long, impatient (on my end) wait: 17 Microns and Monument, both of which “go hard” as the kids these days would put it. While both tracks are excellently mixed, produced and written, Monument is the one that has really stuck out the most to me and you will likely find yourself also hitting the ‘repeat: 1’ button once you hear it.

Listening to Ragweed is like an infinite loop of pure serotonin for your mind - it feels as though you’re on a racetrack, going full speed with no obstacles in the way, therefore you can’t be harmed. Yes, Ragweed are that good, and with an ultra-promising career ahead of them, they’re certainly worth chucking on all of your playlists and even telling everyone that you come across about them.
