The stars magically have aligned, and my mind is at peace with the release of Kipper Reid’s latest single, Cosmic Collision Course, a mellow piece of art that is easy-listening and filled with this explosion of freedom that has come from the Auckland-based fantastic four.
Jono, Liam, Tom and Liam have tuned into their indie-pop side, with a dash of surf with their second single, which came out last Friday.
Cosmic Collision Course is characterised by gentle vibes - you don’t feel forced into a corner, so to speak, with the track. It’s one that you can just melt into because it is such a pleasurable listen and it does not miss a single beat.
Cosmic Collision Course is one of those songs that you would want to hear mid-summertime festival, its grounding, yet magnetic, all rolled into one. It’s like the last piece of the puzzle that you were unable to find originally - occupying a piece of space with its well-placed elements, and that is down to the formed brotherhood, in the figurative sense, of the Kipper Reid lads and how they have easily come together to connect with their array of talents.
Having known two of the members prior to their arrival into Kipper Reid, I can hear a slight blend of their former bands that show up during parts of Cosmic Collision Course, which is actually quite warming to experience once again.
While Cosmic Collision Course isn’t built completely around deep, emotional movement, it does stand on its own two feet. It proves how good Kipper Reid are, without actually trying too hard. They just naturally are.
Kipper Reid are not going to be the loudest band in the room, but they certainly will make an impression if you stay around a listen for a while. Which you absolutely should.
