Double Parked have parked up once again with a new release, one of many that we are set to be graced with from them, and this one is something really special that rocks you into a new wave of emotion.
This release is a different direction for Double Parked as they have hidden this side of their musical presence previously, but now, the doors have well and truly blown open to showcase a slightly more tender point of view from these five West Auckland mates.
Double Parked have immersed themselves into this whole new genre of theirs - post-surf, which they have literally locked into for this first string of forthcoming releases, which is quite endearing.
Without hesitation, the song jumps straight into it, there is no need for a long instrumental introduction, however, we are offered hooks that capture the essence of sophistication, and at the same time, the track touches on sensitive topics that tend to be too often swept under the carpet in normal everyday life.
Double Parked set a high bar with this track, it’s almost as though something has been awoken within you when listening to it. There is this air of mystical understanding within Necklace, a feeling that Double Parked’s audience will also likely be able to embrace upon hearing because it goes beyond the depths of being vulnerable with just a couple of close friends; it now engages an entirely new listening-base.
Necklace tells a story of the not-so-shining side to life; battles of mental health, those horrible thoughts that make you feel like you aren’t actually who you are, and those worries that make you feel small in such a way that it makes you crawl into the cave of silence and darkness, making it difficult to reemerge.
With Necklace, I visually align this to being sat at the top of a hill, the mist drifting across the city, the lights flickering from houses in the distance, where you are able to look down on a life that has been made which is full of love and wonder, but at the same time, there are natural pockets of hurt and other emotions that we don’t like to touch on as much.
Sitting atop that hill, it feels like you have time out to breathe, to take in what good there still is left to be had. Maybe sitting there on a picnic blanket with a notebook and a pen, furiously writing out every single thought that doesn’t serve a good purpose and walking away, feeling much more refreshed than when you climbed up there hours prior.
Necklace is more than just a release; it is a source of comfort for those who beg to be understood and Double Parked have made this move with such intention that it feels like you have another friend by your side who does, in fact, get it.
It seems as though by having Necklace out in the world, that it is also of security for the band, to know that their audience have their backs, as much as they do for us. A quiet understanding amongst a heavy universe.
Every portion in the production of Necklace comes together to remain cohesive and intentional, with all of the instruments seamlessly pouring from one cup into the next to keep a strong momentum throughout.
All in all, Necklace is a true, introspective piece of genuine, heartfelt work, and this is just the beginning of a new era for Double Parked.
